Abstract:
As an important component of toothpaste, the binder plays the functions of suspension, thickening and assignment in the paste, and its performance is of great importance to the quality of the paste. Carrageenan not only has excellent salt-resistance and enzyme resistance, but also can enhance and improve the thixotropy and dispersibility of the paste; after compounding with CMC, the stability of the toothpaste is improved, and it is an ideal binder for drug toothpaste whose formulation structure is complicated and difficult to stabilize.
1. About Carrageenan
Carrageenan is a natural polysaccharide plant gum extracted from red algae. These red algae grow in a wide range of marine areas, and the type and amount of carrageenan contained varies from region to region and from species to species. It is widely used in the food industry, daily chemical industry and in biochemical and medical research.
2. About Toothpaste
Toothpaste is a complex paste mixture with both soluble and insoluble dispersing media, and the interaction process between the dispersed phase and the dispersing media directly affects the stability of the paste. As an important component of toothpaste, the binder plays the functions of suspension, thickening and shaping in the paste, and its performance is of great importance to the quality of the paste.
3. Binders in Toothpaste
At present, the main binders used in toothpaste are carrageenan, xanthan gum, hydroxypropyl guar gum, hydroxypropyl cellulose, CMC, etc. Among them, carrageenan, xanthan gum and hydroxypropyl guar gum produce very fine and dielectric resistant paste, which is suitable for the manufacture of functional toothpaste containing more active substances.
4. Application of Carrageenan in Toothpaste
4.1 Carrageenan not only has excellent salt resistance and enzyme resistance, but also can enhance and improve the thixotropy and dispersibility of the paste.
4.2 Carrageenan can obviously improve and enhance the appearance of toothpaste, the paste is very fine and smooth, bright and clean.
4.3 The application of carrageenan in toothpaste is very beneficial to improve the performance of the paste, and it is advisable to choose to use it in combination with other binders under acceptable cost conditions.
4.4 The stability of toothpaste is improved after carrageenan is compounded with CMC, which is an ideal binder for drug toothpaste with complex formula structure and difficult to stabilize.
